Poland’s President Proposes Revoking Zelenskyy’s Honour Amid Historical Tensions

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has proposed stripping Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest honour, the Order of the White Eagle. This suggestion follows Zelenskyy’s decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a move that has sparked controversy due to the historical sensitivities surrounding the UPA’s actions during World War II.

Nawrocki expressed that glorifying the UPA could fuel Russian propaganda and undermine Polish-Ukrainian relations. He stated that Poland has the right to shape its historical narrative, reflecting a growing tension between the two nations. This situation highlights the delicate balance both countries must maintain, especially given their shared adversary in Russia.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has urged for cooler heads to prevail, warning that disputes over history could benefit Russia. His comments underscore the importance of unity in the face of external threats, suggesting that both nations should focus on their current alliance against Russian aggression rather than historical grievances.

As these discussions unfold, the implications for UK foreign policy and support for Ukraine could be significant. The UK has been a staunch ally of Ukraine, and any deterioration in Polish-Ukrainian relations may affect broader European unity against Russian expansionism, potentially impacting UK interests in the region.
