Police in the UK are set to gain enhanced powers to shut down ‘dodgy’ vape shops, barbers, and nail salons for up to a year. This significant change aims to combat organised crime that has infiltrated high streets, where criminal gangs often operate under the guise of legitimate businesses.
The new legislation will double the maximum closure period from six months, allowing law enforcement more time to gather evidence and pursue prosecutions. This change addresses a critical gap where businesses could reopen before investigations concluded, undermining efforts to tackle illegal activities.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighted the urgency of this crackdown, stating that high streets have been compromised by these operations, which are often used for money laundering. The government plans to introduce secondary legislation by the end of the year, following consultations.
In addition to closure powers, officials are reviewing the inclusion of certain businesses on the skilled-worker sponsorship list, amid concerns about visa abuse. This comprehensive approach aims to dismantle the networks behind these illegal enterprises and restore integrity to local economies.
