In a significant operation, British armed forces have boarded a Russian oil tanker in the English Channel, marking the first UK-led interception of its kind. This six-hour mission involved Royal Marine commandos and officers from the National Crime Agency, targeting a vessel linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, which is crucial for funding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The tanker, named Smyrtos, is now being monitored for environmental and safety concerns after being provisionally moved to an anchorage off the south coast of England. The operation was supported by various military aircraft and naval vessels, highlighting the UK’s commitment to countering Russian aggression and enforcing international sanctions.

This interception is particularly noteworthy as it disrupts a shadow fleet that carries 75% of Russia’s sanctioned oil, which has been vital for the Kremlin’s war efforts. The UK government has already sanctioned over 500 vessels to combat this illicit trade, and this operation serves as a clear message that such activities will not go unchecked.

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis praised the operation for its skill and professionalism, while opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized its importance in reminding those supporting Putin’s war that they cannot evade accountability. This operation not only impacts Russia’s oil supply but also reinforces the UK’s role in global security efforts against unlawful actions.
