Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning following a drone strike on a major oil refinery in Moscow. He stated, “If Ukraine burns, so will Moscow,” highlighting the escalating tit-for-tat nature of the conflict. This strike was a direct response to Russia’s recent attacks on significant Ukrainian sites, including the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Moscow refinery, crucial for supplying fuel to the region, processes over 12 million tonnes of crude oil annually and accounts for 40% of Moscow’s fuel market. Zelenskyy’s comments underscore the vulnerability of even the most fortified locations in Russia, as he noted that Moscow’s advanced air defences failed to intercept the Ukrainian drones.
Zelenskyy also called for intensified sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector and military capabilities. He emphasized that the pressure must increase not only from Ukraine but also from European and American allies, aiming to make the Russian populace aware that their leader, Vladimir Putin, is the sole architect of the ongoing war.
This development signals a potential shift in the conflict, where Ukraine is willing to escalate its responses to Russian aggression. The implications for energy security in Europe could be significant, as disruptions in Russian fuel supplies may lead to increased prices and further economic strain across the continent.
