Households Ditch Second Cars to Save on Rising Driving Costs

As the cost of living continues to rise, many UK households are opting to give up their second cars, potentially saving over £1,500 annually. Research from Tempcover indicates that 36% of motorists have reduced their vehicle count in the past two years, with those downsizing reporting significant savings on insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs.

This trend reflects changing driving habits, particularly since the pandemic, with 39% of drivers noting they travel less than before. The shift towards fewer vehicles is also influenced by high maintenance costs and soaring fuel prices, prompting families to keep their cars longer, with many now averaging seven years old.

Interestingly, the move to a single vehicle is not causing major disruptions. In fact, 57% of those who downsized feel financially better off, often coordinating car use effectively among family members. This suggests a growing acceptance of shared vehicle arrangements, which could reshape car ownership norms in the UK.

Looking ahead, the research hints at a potential shift away from traditional car ownership altogether, with 23% of drivers considering alternatives like car-sharing schemes. This evolving mindset could lead to increased demand for flexible transport options, reflecting broader societal changes in how we view mobility and ownership.
