Health Risks of Driving with Windows Down in Heatwave

As temperatures in the UK soar to 35C, motorists are being cautioned against driving with their windows down. Experts warn that at higher speeds, the wind noise can reach levels harmful to hearing, comparable to that of power tools or a concert.

Driving at 70mph with the windows down can expose drivers to noise levels of 90-100dB, which can lead to immediate hearing damage. Audiologist Darren Horne from Boots Hearingcare highlights that just 15 minutes of exposure at these levels can cause significant harm, including ‘listening fatigue’ that may impair a driver’s responsiveness to important sounds like car horns and sirens.

The advice to keep windows up at speeds above 50mph is particularly crucial during the current heatwave, as the UK Health Security Agency has issued health alerts across southern and eastern England. With the Met Office forecasting high temperatures, using air conditioning is recommended to maintain comfort and safety.

This warning underscores the importance of being aware of not just the heat but also the potential auditory hazards while driving, which could have serious implications for road safety and personal health.
