Tafwyl Festival Faces Criticism Over Long Queues and Access Issues

The Tafwyl festival, held at Cardiff Castle, has come under fire after attendees reported being ‘penned in’ due to long queues. With around 20,000 people attending, many families faced significant delays, with some unable to enter the festival on Saturday. Rhodri Evans, a festival-goer, described the experience as uncomfortable for families with young children, highlighting a shift in the festival’s family-friendly atmosphere.

Organisers, Menter Caerdydd, acknowledged the issues and are considering alternative locations for future events to better manage crowds. The festival’s chief executive, Heulyn Rees, noted that while the turnout was encouraging, it presented logistical challenges that impacted the experience for many attendees. Changes were made on the second day to expedite security checks, but the initial problems raised concerns about the festival’s capacity to remain free and accessible.

The festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary, aims to promote the Welsh language and culture, making it vital for many who may not engage with Welsh outside of such events. However, the recent difficulties have sparked discussions about balancing accessibility with crowd control, especially as interest in the festival grows.

As the organisers plan to meet with Cardiff council to discuss future venues, the festival’s ability to maintain its welcoming atmosphere while accommodating increasing numbers will be crucial. The outcome of these discussions could shape the future of Tafwyl and its role in promoting Welsh culture.
