A severe lightning storm struck a handball competition in Rastatt, Germany, injuring at least ten people, including a 13-year-old child. The incident occurred as participants attempted to secure tents amid strong winds, highlighting the dangers of extreme weather during outdoor events.

One individual suffered serious injuries, while others experienced minor wounds. The storm not only affected the competition but also caused widespread power outages, leaving many residents without electricity for up to 90 minutes. This incident raises concerns about the safety protocols in place for outdoor sports during unpredictable weather conditions.

Cem Özdemir, the minister-president of Baden-Württemberg, acknowledged the significant impact of the storm on local healthcare and businesses, emphasizing the need for rapid restoration of services. The event serves as a reminder of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, which can disrupt community activities and pose risks to public safety.

As further storms are anticipated, the region may face additional challenges, including potential record-breaking temperatures. This situation underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness regarding climate-related risks, particularly for outdoor gatherings and events.
