Police Officer Exploits Vulnerable Neighbour for £30,000

A police officer has been dismissed after misusing an elderly neighbour’s bank card to spend nearly £30,000 over three years. PC Gary Carson, from Merseyside Police, exploited the woman’s trust, making purchases while she was hospitalised. The misconduct panel found his actions to be calculated and dishonest, breaching professional standards.

The elderly woman had initially allowed Carson access to her card for minor purchases, but he went far beyond this, buying groceries and takeout meals for himself and his family. His spending included significant amounts at major retailers and fast-food chains, raising questions about his integrity as a police officer.

The situation came to light when the woman’s daughter discovered her mother living in squalor, with little food and signs of neglect. Despite his police training, Carson failed to report her living conditions, highlighting a serious lapse in duty of care.

While the Crown Prosecution Service chose not to pursue criminal charges, the panel’s decision underscores the importance of accountability in law enforcement. This case not only reflects on Carson’s misconduct but also raises concerns about the safeguarding of vulnerable individuals within the community.
