New Driving Test Rules Aim to Combat Price Gouging

Starting 12 May, learner drivers in the UK will be required to book their own driving tests, a significant shift from previous regulations that allowed instructors to handle bookings. This change is designed to tackle long waiting times and prevent the exploitation of test slots by unscrupulous firms that resell them at inflated prices.

The new system aims to empower learners by giving them direct control over their test scheduling. Previously, some instructors were found to sell their booking access to third parties, leading to inflated costs for learners, with some paying up to £500 for a test that typically costs £62.

For UK learners, this means they will need to be proactive in managing their test bookings, which could help reduce waiting times but may also require more organisation. Learners must ensure they are ready for the test before booking, as they can only make limited changes to their appointments.

Looking ahead, potential candidates should monitor the availability of test slots closely and be prepared for the possibility of increased demand as the new rules take effect. This could lead to further changes in how tests are scheduled and managed in the future.
