IAEA Calls for Stronger Oversight of Iran’s Nuclear Programme

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has intensified its demands for a robust verification system to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities. This call comes amid conflicting claims from the US and Iran regarding ceasefire negotiations, highlighting the fragility of the current diplomatic landscape.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasised the necessity of full access to Iran’s nuclear sites, particularly following a series of attacks that have complicated inspections. The agency’s insistence on verification is crucial, as it aims to ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, a concern echoed by Western nations.

The ongoing tensions are exacerbated by Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the IAEA after the US and Israeli strikes. Although Iran has allowed some inspections to resume, access to bombed sites remains unresolved, raising questions about the transparency of its nuclear programme.

As negotiations continue, the contrasting narratives from both countries create uncertainty. The IAEA’s role in verifying Iran’s compliance will be pivotal in shaping future relations and could significantly impact regional stability and international security efforts.
