End of Strikes: What the New Pay Deal Means for Resident Doctors

Resident doctors in England have voted to accept a government pay deal, marking the end of a three-year dispute that led to numerous strikes. This agreement promises a 3.5% pay rise this year, with backdated pay from April 2026, and an average increase of 4.9% under the wider package. Starting salaries will exceed £40,000, with senior doctors earning up to £76,500, plus additional earnings for unsociable hours.

The deal also includes 4,500 new training positions and coverage for exam fees, addressing long-standing concerns about job security and financial burdens on doctors. This resolution is expected to alleviate the strain on the NHS, which has faced significant appointment cancellations due to the strikes, impacting patient care.

Health Secretary James Murray welcomed the agreement, highlighting its benefits for both doctors and patients. The resolution comes at a crucial time as resident doctors play a vital role in the NHS, comprising nearly half of all doctors in England and working in various settings, including A&E and GP surgeries.

While the situation in Wales and Northern Ireland remains unresolved, this deal in England signals a potential shift towards stability in the healthcare sector, with implications for future recruitment and retention of medical professionals in the NHS.
