A new mural in Pontyates, Carmarthenshire, features Eastenders icon Dot Cotton, alongside a dragon and local sports figures. This unexpected artwork has sparked curiosity, as many locals were unaware of the late June Brown’s connection to the village.
During World War II, Brown was evacuated to Pontyates at the age of 12, where she found refuge. The mural, created by artist Steve Jenkins, aims to celebrate the village’s history and brighten the community, which has a population of around 1,500.
The idea for including Dot Cotton emerged during a brainstorming session with local schoolchildren, who were unaware of her past. This revelation has led to increased interest in Brown’s life and her fond memories of the village, which she referred to as a “safe haven.”
The mural has become a talking point among residents, particularly the older generation who remember her story. It serves not only as a tribute to Brown but also as a reminder of the village’s rich history and its connection to popular culture.
