Ukraine Seeks SCALP Missile Production License from France

Ukraine is in discussions with France to secure a license for the production of SCALP missiles domestically. This initiative, revealed by Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, represents a significant step in Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its military capabilities amidst ongoing conflict. The SCALP missiles, comparable to the UK’s Storm Shadow, have already been deployed by Ukraine in operations against Russian targets.

The negotiations were initiated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month. While progress is noted, Fedorov cautioned that complexities around intellectual property and production logistics could delay the process. This move aligns with broader discussions among G7 leaders about enabling Ukraine to manufacture Western weaponry.

Ukraine’s push for self-sufficiency in arms production is critical, especially as it seeks licenses for advanced systems like the US-made Patriot air defence systems. With Russia reportedly producing ballistic missiles at a rapid rate, enhancing Ukraine’s domestic production capabilities could shift the balance in the ongoing conflict.

As the war continues, the ability to manufacture these advanced weapons domestically may not only improve Ukraine’s defence posture but also impact international arms dynamics, potentially leading to greater support for Kyiv in its military endeavors.
