Former Police Officer Sentenced for Child Indecency

Ryan McKenna, a former police officer, has been sentenced to one year in prison for gross indecency towards a child. The incident, which occurred between 2004 and 2009, involved inappropriate behaviour with a victim who was close to her 11th birthday at the time. Judge Richard Greene highlighted the significant impact on the victim’s life and the breach of trust involved, as McKenna was in a position of authority.

The court noted that McKenna’s actions were premeditated, as arrangements had been made for him to sleep in the same bed as the victim. While his defence argued that there was no skin-on-skin contact, the judge maintained that the seriousness of the offence warranted a custodial sentence. McKenna has been in custody since December 2025, and his conviction has led to significant financial strain on his family.

Judge Greene acknowledged McKenna’s low risk of reoffending and his stable family support, but emphasized that the nature of the crime necessitated imprisonment. The case raises concerns about the safeguarding of children and the responsibilities of those in trusted positions, particularly within law enforcement.

This sentencing serves as a reminder of the long-lasting effects of such abuse on victims and the importance of accountability for those who violate their positions of trust. The case may also prompt discussions on how to better protect children from similar incidents in the future.
