An explosion at a cafe in central Damascus has resulted in at least five fatalities and left 16 others injured, according to Syria’s Ministry of Health. The blast occurred around 3:24 PM local time on al-Nasser Street in the al-Marjah district, close to the Palace of Justice, raising concerns about security in the area.
Witnesses reported severe damage to the cafe, with blood visible on the floor. Local residents provided first aid to the injured until ambulances arrived. Syrian state media indicated that the explosion was caused by an explosive device, prompting an immediate investigation by authorities.
Security forces have cordoned off the site, fearing a potential secondary explosion. The governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, acknowledged recent improvements in the security situation but warned that threats remain as some factions may seek to undermine stability.
This incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in Syria, where despite claims of improved security, the risk of violence persists. The investigation’s outcome may reveal deeper issues affecting public safety and the fragile state of peace in the region.
