A remarkable discovery has been made at the National Archives in Kew, where a volunteer unearthed a rare copy of the US Declaration of Independence. This particular document, known as the Exeter printing, is one of only 11 surviving copies and the only one located outside the United States. Its significance lies not only in its rarity but also in the story of its journey from an American privateer ship to British naval archives.

The document was found among Royal Navy correspondence, revealing how news of the declaration spread during the American Revolution. Captured from the privateer ship Dalton in 1776, it highlights the transatlantic connections and the diverse crew that fought for American independence. The captain, Eleazer Johnson, likely shared the declaration with his crew, emphasizing the motivations behind their perilous missions.

This finding coincides with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the declaration, prompting reflections on its historical context and the implications of its transference to British hands. The document serves as a powerful reminder of the intertwined histories of the US and the UK during a pivotal moment in world history.

As historians delve deeper into the narratives surrounding this document, it may shed light on the lives of individuals like Daniel Cottle, a free black man who served on the Dalton. The discovery not only enriches our understanding of the American Revolution but also underscores the importance of archival work in uncovering hidden histories.
