The Ilford Park Polish Home, known affectionately as ‘Little Poland’, is facing potential closure as the Ministry of Defence reviews its future due to a decline in resident numbers. This hostel, established in 1948 as a symbol of gratitude to Polish veterans, serves a unique cultural role, providing a space where elderly Polish nationals can receive care in their native language and celebrate their heritage.
Over 10,000 people have signed a petition urging the government to preserve this vital institution, highlighting its importance as the last of its kind in the UK. The petition stresses the need for culturally specific care, which the home provides, nurturing a sense of community among residents who often gather for national celebrations like Polish Independence Day.
The upcoming review coincides with the 80th anniversary of the hostel’s opening and is crucial for determining its fate. Should the numbers continue to dwindle, the site could close by 2028, a move that would not only displace residents but also dismantle a cultural cornerstone for the local Polish community.
Local campaigners and community leaders are mobilising to ensure that the Ilford Park Polish Home remains a viable option for Polish veterans and their families, emphasising the importance of maintaining this cultural heritage site as part of the UK’s commitment to its historical ties with Poland.
