Gaza Students Seek Education Abroad Amid Ongoing Conflict

As the war in Gaza continues, Palestinian students like Amira Al-Khatib are leaving their homes to pursue higher education abroad. Al-Khatib, now studying in the Netherlands, embodies the struggle of many who have faced significant disruptions to their education due to ongoing violence. With just 5% of educational institutions in Gaza remaining intact, the future of education there looks bleak.

The difficulty of leaving Gaza is compounded by bureaucratic hurdles. Students must navigate complex approval processes, which can take months, as seen with Al-Khatib and fellow student Mohammad Herzallah. Both received scholarships through the Gazan Student Support Network but faced long delays before they could depart.

For many, including those with scholarships to Malaysia, the uncertainty remains. While some have received transit approval, the lack of diplomatic relations complicates their ability to leave. This situation highlights the broader impact of the conflict on education, with UN experts warning of a potential ‘scholasticide’ as Gaza’s educational infrastructure crumbles.

Despite these challenges, some universities in Gaza have resumed online and limited in-person courses, yet the future remains uncertain. As students like Ahmad Zohair Abu Daqqa strive to continue their education amid war, their resilience speaks volumes about the human cost of conflict on the pursuit of knowledge.
