Glasgow Suburb Faces Growing Pains Amid Housing Boom

Robroyston, a suburb of Glasgow, is experiencing a housing boom with around 2,000 new homes being built. However, residents are voicing concerns about the lack of essential amenities such as schools, healthcare facilities, and transport options. Alana Muir, a local parent, highlights the struggle her son faces with a potential 90-minute walk to the nearest secondary school, Smithycroft, which is three miles away.

The rapid expansion of housing has not been matched by infrastructure development, leading to frustration among residents who feel misled by promises of community facilities. The only secondary school available is already oversubscribed, leaving many families without viable educational options for their children.

Local authorities have been criticized for their allocation of funds from new housing developments, with much of the money going towards a train station that lacks adequate transport links to the new homes. This has left residents feeling isolated and unsupported in a growing community.

As the population increases, the demand for basic services will only intensify, raising questions about the long-term sustainability of Robroyston. Without immediate action to address these issues, the suburb risks becoming a case study in the pitfalls of unplanned urban expansion.
