Bethesda’s Game Development Continues Amid Layoffs

Despite significant layoffs at Microsoft, which will see 3,200 staff cut across its gaming divisions, Bethesda’s development of franchises like Wolfenstein and Doom is reportedly still on track. Insiders confirm that while id Software and ZeniMax Online Studios have faced staff reductions, they are not shutting down, allowing for continued work on these popular titles.

The restructuring comes as Xbox shifts its focus towards major franchises such as Halo, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls. However, the commitment to other series like Wolfenstein and Doom suggests a strategic effort to diversify their gaming portfolio, potentially appealing to a broader audience.

Moreover, the ongoing development of a Wolfenstein TV series at Amazon indicates that Microsoft is keen on leveraging its gaming IPs across multiple media formats. This could enhance the brand’s visibility and marketability, especially if a new game release coincides with the show’s debut.

As the gaming landscape evolves, the future of franchises like Doom and Quake remains uncertain, particularly with id Software’s downsizing. However, the continued investment in these franchises suggests that Microsoft is looking to maintain a competitive edge in the gaming market, despite the challenges posed by recent layoffs.
