Poverty and Climate: The Unseen Challenges Ahead

As the deadline for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals approaches, the persistence of extreme poverty remains a pressing concern. Currently, one in ten people globally lives in extreme poverty, with over two billion facing food insecurity. This situation is exacerbated by climate change and ongoing conflicts, which have disrupted progress and increased the number of people affected by natural disasters.

The financial gap for achieving these goals in developing countries is estimated at around $4 trillion, while military spending has reached unprecedented levels. This diversion of funds from development to military efforts could have severe long-term implications for global food security, particularly in vulnerable regions like Africa and parts of Asia.

Moreover, while access to clean drinking water has improved, water stress is a critical issue in many areas, with nearly half of the world’s countries reporting declining river flows. The ongoing climate crisis, marked by record high temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions, threatens to undermine the progress made in various sectors, including energy access and housing.

Experts warn that without urgent action to address these interconnected challenges, the global community risks failing to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The need for a comprehensive approach that includes housing, education, and health is crucial to ensure a sustainable future for all.
