Uruguay Warns EU: Ratify Mercosur or Face Chinese Influence

Uruguay’s Foreign Minister, Mario Lubetkin, has issued a stark warning to the European Union regarding the ratification of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. He argues that failure to complete this process could result in Europe losing its influence in Latin America to China and other global powers. The agreement, hailed as a significant shift in relations, has already been ratified by Mercosur countries, but remains stalled in the European Parliament due to legal reviews.

Lubetkin emphasises the urgency of the situation, stating that while Europe deliberates, Uruguay will not wait indefinitely. He plans to initiate a trade forum to foster cooperation, regardless of the ratification status. This proactive approach highlights a potential shift in trade dynamics, as Uruguay seeks to engage with multiple global partners, including China, which has become its largest trading partner.

The geopolitical landscape is changing, and Lubetkin believes that the EU-Mercosur agreement could lead to increased investment and economic growth for both regions. However, he warns that if Europe delays, it risks losing out on significant opportunities as Mercosur explores trade relations with other nations, including Canada and India.

Ultimately, Lubetkin’s message is clear: the time for action is now. The EU must recognise the strategic importance of this agreement, or risk ceding ground to other powers in a rapidly evolving global market.
