Investigation Reveals Dangerous Baby Products Sold Online

A recent investigation by consumer group Which? has uncovered 150 potentially lethal baby products available on major online marketplaces in the UK. These items include self-feeding prop feeders and sleep pillows linked to suffocation risks, raising serious concerns about the safety of infants. The findings highlight a significant gap in the responsibility of online platforms to monitor and prevent dangerous products from reaching consumers.

Among the identified products, nearly a quarter were found on Amazon, which claims to prioritise customer safety. However, the presence of these hazardous items contradicts this assertion, prompting calls for stricter regulations. Which? is urging the government to enforce the Product Regulation and Metrology Act, which would hold online marketplaces accountable for third-party products.

The investigation revealed alarming specifics, such as self-feeding devices that allow unsupervised bottle-feeding, increasing choking risks. Additionally, sleep pillows marketed for infants have been associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), underscoring the urgent need for regulatory action to protect vulnerable consumers.

As online shopping continues to grow, the responsibility of these platforms to ensure product safety becomes increasingly critical. The findings serve as a warning to parents and a call to action for regulators to implement necessary safety measures to prevent further risks to children.
