A five-week strike by around 40 workers at Haldane Fisher’s Carnbane site in Newry has concluded with a significant pay increase. The union, Unite, announced that the workers achieved an ‘inflation beating’ pay rise, which was crucial given the rising cost of living.
Previously, the workers had rejected a pay offer of 2.8%, deeming it insufficient against current inflation rates. The successful negotiation highlights the growing trend of workers advocating for better wages in the face of economic pressures.
Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, praised the workers for their determination, stating that their victory serves as a reminder of the power of collective action. This outcome not only boosts the morale of the workers but also sets a precedent for similar negotiations in the building supplies sector and beyond.
As the cost of living continues to rise, this strike victory may inspire other workers to pursue similar actions, potentially leading to broader changes in wage structures across various industries in Northern Ireland and the UK.
