Twelve arrests have been made following a credible right-wing terror threat to the UK Ijtima, an Islamic event held in Suffolk. The police’s swift action, which included declaring a major incident, is credited with potentially saving lives, according to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The event, attended by thousands, was cut short as a precautionary measure.

Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed that eight men were detained under the Terrorism Act, while others were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and assisting an offender. This incident highlights the ongoing threat level in the UK, currently assessed as ‘severe’, prompting police to urge public vigilance.

The arrests occurred across various locations, indicating a coordinated effort to neutralise the threat. Commander Helen Flanagan reassured the public that police would act decisively against any potential dangers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in ensuring safety at public events.

Mahmood’s comments reflect a commitment to unity against hatred, particularly for British Muslims who may feel targeted. While the immediate threat has been contained, the situation underscores the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing need for security measures at large gatherings.
