Exhibition Highlights Britons Who Rescued Jews During the Holocaust

A new exhibition in London, titled ‘Between Life and Death’, pays homage to the ordinary Britons who played crucial roles in rescuing Jewish individuals during the Holocaust. This initiative, hosted at the Swiss Cottage Library, showcases stories of bravery and compassion, particularly focusing on the Kindertransport, which brought nearly 10,000 Jewish children to safety in the UK from 1938 to 1940.

Among the poignant narratives is that of Ruth Barnett, a 91-year-old survivor who credits her life to England’s humanitarian efforts. She recalls her harrowing journey from Germany at just four years old, highlighting the stark realities faced by many Jewish families during this dark chapter of history. The exhibition also features the story of Eva Paddock, another Kindertransport child, whose rescue was orchestrated by Sir Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker whose legacy remained largely unrecognised for decades.

The exhibition aims to remind visitors of the profound impact that individual actions can have in times of crisis. Organisers stress the importance of recognising the ‘power of one’, encouraging a reflection on how small acts of kindness can lead to significant change. This message resonates particularly in today’s world, where empathy and action can still make a difference.

As the exhibition travels globally, it serves as a vital reminder of the past and the ongoing need for vigilance against intolerance. The stories shared not only honour those who risked their lives but also inspire current and future generations to stand against injustice and support those in need.
