New Prime Minister Faces Energy Crisis in Ukraine

Ukraine’s parliament has appointed Serhii Koretskyi as the new prime minister amid ongoing challenges from Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. His experience leading Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state energy company, positions him to tackle what could be the most difficult winter in the nation’s history.

Koretskyi’s appointment comes at a critical time as Kyiv prioritises the resilience of its energy systems, which have been under sustained assault. The government is focused on ensuring that cities remain powered during freezing temperatures, a task made more urgent by the ongoing conflict.

Before his role at Naftogaz, Koretskyi managed other state-owned energy firms during a tumultuous period marked by Russia’s full-scale invasion. His leadership will be crucial in maintaining operational stability in Ukraine’s energy sector, which is vital for both civilian life and military operations.

While the reshuffle in government leadership has drawn less public attention than the recent scandal at the Defence Ministry, Koretskyi’s role will significantly impact the daily lives of Ukrainians as they brace for winter amidst ongoing conflict.
