Pope Leo has appointed Michael Router as the new Bishop of Derry, succeeding Donal McKeown. Router, previously Auxiliary Bishop in Armagh, expressed both surprise and honour at his new role, which will officially begin in September.
Router acknowledges the shifting landscape of the Catholic Church in Ireland, noting that it no longer holds the same central position in public life. He highlighted the challenges posed by declining clergy numbers and a growing secular culture, particularly among younger generations who feel distanced from the institutional Church.
In his remarks, Router emphasized the importance of listening to those who have become estranged from the Church, acknowledging the pain caused by past abuses and leadership failures. His approach will focus on healing and reconciliation, rather than nostalgia for a bygone era.
The new bishop’s installation comes at a time when the Church must adapt to significant social and cultural changes. With support from local leaders, Router is expected to bring a fresh perspective and pastoral instinct to the Diocese of Derry as it navigates these challenges.
