Wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change, and rapid detection is crucial to combat their spread. A German startup, OroraTech, is leveraging satellite data and artificial intelligence to enhance early fire detection, filling gaps left by traditional satellite systems that only capture images at specific times of day.

OroraTech’s satellites, equipped with thermal infrared sensors, can detect heat signatures even at night or through smoke. This capability allows them to identify small fires before they escalate, providing critical data to emergency responders within minutes. Their technology is particularly beneficial in remote areas where human observation is limited.

The startup’s innovative approach has attracted clients from various sectors, including government agencies and environmental organisations, across 25 countries. By 2028, OroraTech aims to scan every point on Earth every 15 minutes, significantly improving the speed and accuracy of wildfire response efforts.

Beyond wildfires, the technology has potential applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and even defence, indicating a broader shift in how heat emissions are measured and managed. As wildfires continue to threaten ecosystems and communities, advancements like these could play a vital role in safeguarding lives and property.
