Hosepipe Ban Expands to Cover Millions in South East England

A hosepipe ban now affects 2.4 million people across Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire due to record low rainfall and high temperatures. South East Water has extended restrictions, which were first introduced in Kent, to prevent further depletion of water supplies. The company cites a significant drop in reservoir levels, with some areas receiving only 55% of their average rainfall since March.

The ban prohibits household activities such as watering gardens, cleaning vehicles, and filling ponds, impacting daily routines for residents and businesses alike. Local establishments, like pubs, report substantial financial losses due to water shortages, with one landlord noting losses of up to £6,000 from closures caused by inadequate supply.

Critics highlight that this situation stems from years of underinvestment in water infrastructure. The Consumer Council for Water has urged South East Water to improve its network reliability, as ongoing uncertainty about water availability frustrates customers and undermines conservation efforts.

As the ban officially takes effect, residents are urged to comply immediately. The long-term effects of this ban could lead to changes in water usage habits and highlight the need for infrastructure upgrades to ensure resilience against future droughts.
