Citizen Science Revolutionises Marine Research in the Canary Islands

A new citizen science initiative in the Canary Islands is transforming marine research by inviting the public to contribute photos of marine life. This project, known as RedPROMAR, has already recorded over 85,000 sightings, helping scientists identify more than 5,000 species. The involvement of local divers, like Dennis Rabeling, not only aids in species identification but also fosters a deeper connection between the community and their marine environment.

The project serves as an educational tool, bringing ocean culture into classrooms. Students engage with marine biology through hands-on experiences, learning about the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems. This immersive approach not only enhances their understanding but also empowers them to become stewards of their local environment.

Moreover, RedPROMAR acts as an early-warning system for invasive species and environmental changes linked to climate change. By analysing the data collected from public submissions, scientists can track unusual patterns and surges in species sightings, which might otherwise go unnoticed. This real-time monitoring is crucial for preserving biodiversity in the region.

As the project expands to other areas like Cape Verde and Madeira, it highlights the importance of community involvement in scientific research. The collaboration between scientists and citizens exemplifies how collective efforts can lead to significant advancements in understanding and protecting our oceans.
