Vulnerability in EU Jobs: A Closer Look at Spain’s Leading Rate

A recent report by Eurofound reveals that nearly one in five jobs across the EU is classified as vulnerable, with Spain having the highest rate at 29%. This vulnerability encompasses inadequate pay, job insecurity, and lack of workplace rights, highlighting significant disparities in employment conditions across Europe.

The implications of this vulnerability are profound, particularly for specific demographics such as women, young workers, and migrants, who are disproportionately affected. These groups often face multiple layers of disadvantage, leading to poorer job security and mental health outcomes. The report indicates that while some vulnerable workers report better work intensity, the accumulation of vulnerabilities consistently results in negative long-term effects.

Interestingly, the trend shows a decline in job vulnerability since 2016, suggesting improvements in job quality. However, the report warns that flexibility in the labour market must not come at the expense of eroding employment standards. As the European Commission considers the Quality Jobs Act, the need for effective enforcement of labour rights becomes increasingly critical.

The findings serve as a wake-up call for policymakers to address the underlying issues contributing to job vulnerability, particularly in countries like Spain. As the EU navigates economic recovery, ensuring equitable job conditions will be essential for fostering a resilient workforce.
