Millions at Risk Due to Defibrillator Shortage in England and Wales

Over 16 million people in England and Wales are at heightened risk of death from cardiac arrest due to a lack of accessible defibrillators. Research indicates that many live more than a 1km round trip from a 24/7 defibrillator, which is critical for survival in emergencies. With over 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the UK, timely access to these devices can significantly improve survival rates.

The Heart Restart campaign’s analysis reveals that more than half of the population does not live within a brisk walk of a defibrillator. This disparity highlights alarming inequalities, particularly in areas like Harlow and Birmingham, where large portions of the population are far from lifesaving devices. The British Heart Foundation is responding by launching a campaign to install 400 community defibrillators in regions identified as having the greatest need.

The urgency of this issue cannot be overstated; every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by 10%. The British Heart Foundation and other advocates are calling for government action to make these devices more accessible, including removing VAT on defibrillators and related equipment.

As communities rally for better access, the message is clear: no one should be disadvantaged by their location when it comes to life-saving medical care. Ensuring that defibrillators are within reach could mean the difference between life and death for many individuals experiencing cardiac emergencies.
