Islington’s Costly Zebra Crossing Sparks Outrage

Residents in Islington are expressing disbelief over the £131,000 spent on a zebra crossing on Thorpedale Road, a street deemed quiet by local councillors. The expenditure, revealed through a Freedom of Information request, has raised questions about the value for money in public spending, especially when similar crossings in the area have historically cost around £15,000.

Councillor Jonathan Ward highlighted the need for more imaginative solutions, suggesting that the funds could have been better used for landscaping rather than a costly crossing. The council defended the expenditure by detailing additional safety upgrades, including widened pavements and improved street lighting, aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing safety for schoolchildren.

This incident reflects a broader concern about public spending in urban areas, particularly as councils face budget constraints. The debate over the crossing’s cost comes at a time when Transport for London plans to implement vehicle bans on 200 more roads outside schools to promote walking and improve air quality.

As London continues to push for safer streets, the scrutiny of such expenditures may lead to calls for more transparency and accountability in how public funds are allocated for infrastructure projects.
