The Royal Mail has released a special set of stamps to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Sir Frank Whittle’s death, a pivotal figure in aviation history. Whittle, who invented the turbojet engine, revolutionised air travel and military aviation, making significant contributions that shaped Britain’s aerospace industry.

This stamp collection features images of Whittle alongside eight iconic British jet aircraft, highlighting the evolution of jet technology from the Gloster Meteor, the first Allied jet fighter in combat, to the modern Lockheed Martin F35B Lightning II. These aircraft not only represent technological advancements but also the legacy of British engineering excellence.

Whittle’s journey began in Coventry, where he founded Power Jets Limited to develop his designs, despite facing initial government resistance. His innovations led to the RAF’s first jet aircraft, which played crucial roles in World War II and beyond, influencing generations of engineers and aviators.

As we celebrate this milestone, the stamps serve as a reminder of the importance of innovation in aviation and the ongoing impact of Whittle’s work on both military and civilian aircraft. The release coincides with significant anniversaries for several aircraft, further cementing the legacy of British aviation achievements.
