Children in Deprived Areas Face Higher Lung Admission Rates

Children living in England’s poorest areas are facing alarming rates of hospital admissions for respiratory infections, with a 40% higher likelihood compared to their peers in wealthier regions. This stark disparity highlights the urgent need to address the underlying causes, particularly air pollution, which is a significant risk factor for respiratory health in these communities.

In 2024/25, the data revealed that 1,941 out of every 100,000 children in the most deprived fifth of England were admitted to hospitals for respiratory issues, contrasting sharply with 1,380 in the least deprived areas. This suggests that children in poorer neighbourhoods are not only more susceptible to illness but also face long-term health consequences that could affect their development and quality of life.

Experts emphasize that air pollution is just one part of a broader issue, which includes poor housing conditions, overcrowding, and exposure to indoor pollutants. These factors collectively contribute to the increased vulnerability of children in these areas, making it imperative for policymakers to take action to improve living conditions and air quality.

The call for reform is clear: an overhaul of the UK’s Clean Air Act is necessary to establish legally binding targets that protect the health of children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for ensuring that no child’s future is determined by their postcode.
