Modi’s Fast-Track Courts: A Response to Youth Protests

In a bid to quell the escalating youth-led protests in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the establishment of fast-track courts aimed at swiftly punishing corrupt officials involved in examination paper leaks. This move comes as the protests, dubbed the ‘Cockroach’ movement, challenge his government’s integrity and accountability.

The protests were ignited by widespread anger over repeated exam leaks, which have reportedly occurred 152 times in the past decade without a single conviction. Modi’s promise of expedited justice is seen as a response to the demands for accountability, but many protesters remain sceptical, arguing that this is merely a superficial solution to a deeper systemic issue.

The Cockroach Janta Party, representing the protesters, has rejected Modi’s proposal, insisting that true accountability requires more than just fast-tracked trials. They are calling for the resignation of the Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, and significant reforms in the education system, which they believe is being undermined by corruption.

As protests continue to grow, with thousands gathering in Delhi and solidarity demonstrations across other cities, the political implications for Modi’s government are significant. Analysts suggest that failing to address the protesters’ core demands could lead to a loss of support among young voters, a crucial demographic for the future of his administration.
