Farmers Turn to Tourism Amid Economic Pressures

UK farmers are increasingly diversifying into tourism to survive rising costs and changing agricultural landscapes. Jeremy Stokes, a third-generation farmer from Wiltshire, has introduced a maize maze to support his livestock and crop production. This shift reflects a significant departure from traditional farming methods, as Stokes notes that his grandfather would struggle to understand this new approach.

The rising cost of red diesel, which has surged by 40% since mid-2025, has forced farmers to reconsider their strategies. While historically, expanding farmland or livestock was the norm, today’s farmers must innovate to sustain their businesses. Stokes’ risk in establishing the maze is indicative of a broader trend where profitability is sought outside of conventional food production.

Similarly, Lodge Farm near Chippenham has dedicated land for sunflower picking, underscoring the critical importance of such initiatives for financial stability. Farmers like Claire emphasize that low crop prices coupled with high fuel costs make tourist attractions essential for survival.

With the government urging increased food production for national security, the pressures on farmers are mounting. As Katie Davies from NFU Wiltshire points out, the resilience of farmers is being tested as they navigate economic challenges, extreme weather, and the need for public understanding of their struggles.
