Rediscovering Edinburgh’s Hidden History Through Photography

A new exhibition at the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh showcases the work of photographer Sandra George, who captured life in the city during the 1980s and 1990s. This collection, featuring over 200 photographs, highlights the vibrancy and struggles of communities such as Craigmillar and Wester Hailes, offering a rare glimpse into the past that resonates with today’s social issues.

George’s work, which remained largely unseen until after her death in 2013, is now being preserved and digitised by the heritage organisation Craigmillar Now. The exhibition not only displays her photographs but also includes her cameras and notebooks, revealing her philosophy of understanding people from their own perspectives. This approach is particularly relevant in today’s discussions about representation and identity.

The exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community narratives and the role of art in fostering local pride. By bringing these images to a wider audience, it encourages reflection on the changes in Edinburgh’s social landscape over the decades, and how these histories shape current identities.

As visitors engage with George’s work, they are invited to consider the ongoing impact of her activism and artistry. The exhibition, titled “Start from the Level,” runs until 27 September, and aims to inspire a new generation to appreciate the stories behind their surroundings.
