Major London Station Closures: What You Need to Know

Two major London stations, Charing Cross and Waterloo East, will be closed for three weeks starting Sunday, impacting Southeastern train services. This closure is part of a £20 million engineering project aimed at improving reliability and safety for passengers. With no trains calling at these stations until 17 August, services will be diverted to other London stations, leading to altered timetables and fewer trains on some routes.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead, as the first and last trains will also change during this period. The closure is strategically timed for summer when passenger numbers are typically lower, allowing for extensive repairs that would otherwise take many weekends to complete. The engineering work includes laying new track and upgrading drainage systems to enhance service quality.

This project addresses recent faults that have caused significant delays, amounting to over 21,000 minutes. By consolidating the work into one extended closure, Network Rail aims to minimize disruption in the long run. Passengers using paper tickets will have alternative travel options, including bus routes and other train services, but must be aware of restrictions on eTickets.

While services will resume on 17 August, further closures are planned later in the year, indicating ongoing infrastructure improvements. Commuters should stay informed about these changes to avoid unexpected travel issues.
