Extreme Heat Reveals Hidden Archaeological Treasures in Wales

Wales is experiencing a remarkable archaeological revelation as extreme heat and drought conditions have exposed ancient sites across the landscape. With only five percent of typical July rainfall, the parched earth has unveiled patterns of vegetation that indicate the presence of long-buried structures, some of which have not been visible for decades.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales reports that these newly revealed sites span thousands of years, showcasing prehistoric burial monuments, Roman fortifications, and even First World War military training features. The unique conditions have allowed archaeologists to document these sites from the air, capturing details that would otherwise remain hidden.

Among the most significant discoveries is a Neolithic long barrow near Welshpool, estimated to be around 5,000 years old, and Roman buildings at Caerhun fort. The findings highlight how climate change is transforming archaeological practices, making aerial surveys a more frequent necessity as extreme weather becomes the norm.

As these ancient sites emerge, they not only enrich our understanding of history but also raise awareness about the impact of climate on cultural heritage. The urgency to document these findings before rain obscures them again underscores the delicate balance between preserving history and the changing environment.
