Cafes Left Behind as Business Rates Cut Favors Pubs

Cafes across England are expressing frustration over their exclusion from a new business rates cut aimed at supporting pubs and live music venues. The initiative, announced by Andy Burnham, is set to save pubs an estimated £1,100 annually, a significant relief amid rising costs. However, many cafe owners argue that they face similar financial pressures and deserve support as vital community spaces.

Ferdinand Geus, manager of Sheba Coffee, highlights the negative impact of this decision on his business, which relies on supporting Yemeni coffee farmers. He believes that the exclusion of cafes from the rates cut undermines their role as community hubs and workplaces. Geus emphasizes that independent cafes are essential for local economies and should not be overlooked in favor of alcohol-serving establishments.

Hakan Elbir, founder of the Dialogue Cafe, echoes these sentiments, noting that the financial advantages given to pubs could drive customers away from cafes, further straining their already tight margins. Elbir argues that the government is missing an opportunity to support inclusive businesses that contribute positively to society.

Both Geus and Elbir call for a reevaluation of the support strategy, urging policymakers to recognize the diverse needs of community spaces. They stress that cafes are not just retail outlets but integral parts of the social fabric, deserving of equal consideration in financial relief efforts.
