In authoritarian regimes, the internet often becomes a tool for oppression, as seen during the Iranian protests in January 2026 when the government executed one of the largest communication shutdowns in history. This raises the question: how can activists maintain communication in such crises? Enter mesh networks, specifically LoRa mesh networks, which allow users to send encrypted messages without relying on traditional internet infrastructure.
LoRa technology uses small radio modules to create a decentralized network where messages can be relayed over long distances. Unlike conventional internet communications, these networks are resilient to shutdowns because they lack a central point of failure. Each device acts as a node, forwarding messages even if some nodes are compromised, making it difficult for authorities to intercept or block communications.
However, while LoRa mesh networks offer a promising alternative, they come with limitations. Users can only send small messages, akin to text messages, and the physical location of transmitters can still be tracked. This poses risks for users in countries where operating unauthorized radio equipment can lead to severe legal repercussions.
Despite these challenges, the potential for mesh networks to empower activists in oppressive environments is significant. As seen in Ukraine, these networks can provide critical communication channels when traditional systems fail, highlighting a growing trend towards alternative communication methods in the face of state censorship.
