Caroline Litman, mother of a trans woman who took her own life, has issued a stark warning to new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. She urges him to reverse the anti-trans policies of his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer, highlighting the urgent need for change in gender-affirming healthcare. Her daughter, Alice, waited over three years for care before her tragic death in May 2022, a situation Caroline claims has only worsened since.
At the recent Trans Pride event in London, attended by thousands, Caroline shared her frustrations about the systemic failures in healthcare that affect the transgender community. She pointed to the new guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which mandates that access to facilities be based on biological sex, potentially endangering trans individuals. This change, effective from August 5, could lead to increased discrimination and mental health challenges for those affected.
Caroline also criticized the draft guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education, which she fears could out trans students to their parents and segregate them in schools. She argues that these policies echo the harmful Section 28 legislation of the 1980s, which restricted discussions of LGBTQ+ issues in education.
In her emotional appeal, Caroline insists that without immediate action, more lives will be lost. She emphasizes that gender-affirming care is crucial for the well-being of trans youth, urging Burnham to listen to the community’s needs and take decisive steps to protect their rights and lives.
