Push for Thames Valley Devolution Gains Momentum

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been invited to the Thames Valley to discuss the potential for a regional mayor, a move that could significantly alter local governance. This invitation comes from Tim Bearder, the leader of Oxfordshire County Council, who is advocating for more local decision-making powers amid concerns over recent government reorganisations.

The government’s decision to restructure seven councils into three unitary authorities has raised alarms among local leaders, who argue that this will complicate governance and dilute essential services. Bearder’s letter to Burnham highlights the need for a stronger settlement that includes an elected mayor, which could enhance accountability and responsiveness to local needs.

Currently, the proposed foundation strategic authority (FSA) lacks the powers and representation that an elected mayor would provide. Critics see this as a downgrade, potentially stalling progress towards a more empowered local government structure. The absence of local consensus on the reorganisation further complicates the situation, with fears that it may fragment crucial services like social care.

Burnham’s support for devolution could lead to a more robust governance model in the Thames Valley, impacting how local services are delivered and how communities engage with their leaders. This initiative may set a precedent for other regions seeking similar powers, reshaping the landscape of local governance across the UK.
