Stranded Ships in Hormuz: A Biodiversity Crisis Looms

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has left over 1,500 cargo ships stranded, creating a unique ecological threat. Scientists warn that these vessels, immobilised for months, are becoming encrusted with invasive marine species. When trade resumes, these ships could inadvertently spread these organisms globally, leading to significant ecological disruption.

Marine biologists describe this situation as a potential ‘bio-invasion super-spreader event.’ Unlike typical shipping patterns where vessels remain stationary for only a few days, the prolonged anchorage allows invasive species to thrive on hulls, posing a risk to native marine ecosystems.

The Gulf region is already a hotspot for invasive species, and the hardy organisms that have adapted to its extreme conditions may prove particularly resilient when introduced to new environments. Ports in regions with similar climates, such as India and Singapore, are at heightened risk of these invasions.

To mitigate this threat, experts urge shipping companies and governments to implement rigorous inspection and cleaning protocols before vessels depart the Gulf. The potential for irreversible damage to vital marine habitats underscores the urgent need for action to prevent a global biodiversity crisis.
