India’s Heat Crisis: The Hidden Toll on Lives and Livelihoods

As extreme heat grips India, the death toll among vulnerable workers is rising alarmingly. In rural areas, many like Palli Mahalaxmi, who rely on manual labour for survival, are facing life-threatening conditions. Mahalaxmi’s tragic death from heatstroke highlights a broader crisis, with experts warning that the official mortality figures are grossly underestimated. While India reported only 460 heat-related deaths in 2024, contrasting statistics from Europe suggest a much higher toll, indicating a severe lack of awareness and reporting on the issue.

The informal sector, which employs 90% of India’s workforce, offers little protection against the rising temperatures. Workers, including farmers and construction labourers, are exposed to extreme heat daily, often exceeding 44°C. This relentless exposure not only leads to immediate health risks but also affects long-term productivity and economic stability. The government’s failure to provide adequate support or compensation for families affected by heat-related deaths exacerbates the situation, leaving them in dire straits.

Moreover, the psychological impact of such losses cannot be overlooked. Families are left to cope with grief and financial uncertainty, as seen in Mahalaxmi’s family, who now rely on community support. The increasing frequency of heatwaves, coupled with inadequate governmental response, signals a growing crisis that could have far-reaching implications for India’s economy and social fabric.

As climate change continues to escalate, the urgency for effective policies and protective measures for outdoor workers becomes critical. Without immediate action, the heat crisis will not only claim more lives but also threaten the livelihoods of millions, pushing already vulnerable communities further into poverty.
