The Hidden Costs of Xenophobia: Ugandan Migrants Return Home

Winniefred Kabiri’s return to Uganda after 20 years in South Africa highlights the severe impact of xenophobia on migrants. Forced to leave due to escalating anti-immigrant tensions, she abandoned a life built on education and entrepreneurship. Kabiri’s story is not unique; over 1,100 Ugandans were evacuated, leaving behind businesses and networks they had developed over decades.

The rise in xenophobic sentiment in South Africa has deep roots in economic frustration and inequality, often scapegoating migrants for local issues. This year, the situation worsened, with public demonstrations and violence against foreign nationals. Many migrants, regardless of their legal status, felt increasingly vulnerable, leading to a mass exodus.

For returnees like Kabiri and Mathias Baguma, the challenge now lies in rebuilding their lives in Uganda. The Ugandan government has initiated support programs to assist with reintegration, offering counseling and business development opportunities. However, the emotional and financial toll of starting over after years abroad is daunting.

As these returnees navigate their new realities, their experiences serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of xenophobia and the resilience required to rebuild lives disrupted by intolerance.
