Urgent Action Needed as UK Car Production Declines

The UK automotive industry is facing a significant downturn, with car production dropping by 7.5% in the first half of 2026. This decline, amounting to just under 386,000 vehicles produced, raises concerns about the future of approximately 188,000 jobs in the sector. Experts warn that without immediate intervention, the industry could struggle to recover, impacting not only employment but also the broader economy.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) highlights that the UK must enhance its competitiveness to attract investment and secure the production of over one million vehicles annually. Factors contributing to the decline include high energy costs and the ongoing transition to electric vehicles, which have led to restructuring within companies.

Exports remain crucial, with over 294,000 vehicles shipped abroad, primarily to Europe. However, the SMMT cautions that the current trade relationship with the EU could be jeopardised without reforms to regulations and energy costs. This situation poses a risk to the £80 billion trade relationship between the UK and EU, which is vital for the automotive sector’s health.

To avert further decline, industry leaders are calling for urgent government action. They stress that addressing energy costs and improving trading arrangements could foster growth across the UK, safeguarding jobs and ensuring the automotive sector remains a cornerstone of the economy.
